Shore Fishing and Casting Club International. AKA: SFCCI
Texas State Championships.
03/20/04
Location: Argenta Texas USA.
We started the day early, putting together our new court system to try out. It took a while to set up, but things are getting better and better all the time. The new court is made of plastic that is normally used to strap down heavy packages. We laid the centerline, and at six hundred feet, put a measured cross line that went from the centerline to the two outside lines. This gave us the perfect angle for the court, 15 degrees each side of the centerline. After that, from 400 ft., we ran rope around the flags so that at every hundred feet we had cross lines. This was a bit of a problem setting it up for the first time but it should be a breeze to run out next time we use it.
Argenta is a small old town about 30 miles towards San Antonio from Corpus Christi. Our hosts for the event were Will Cotton and his wife. They provided us with the pasture, which is without doubt the safest casting field we have in Texas at this moment. This field is large enough that we can set it safely at any angle. The wind was blowing between 5 to 10 miles per hour from the SE, backing East. The first cast was at about 9.30 and the last was at 3.30. We had seventeen casts in all. One reason we are able to get in so many casts is that we wind in as we walk out to our sinkers. This saves considerable time compared to walking out, unhooking the sinker, walking back, and then winding in. At the end of the day all casters had enough and were ready to call it quits. Mark was officer of the day and kept us all moving.
Angel went into the lead from the first cast and he stayed comfortably out front the rest of the event.
I think the lack of practice is showing on the Texas boys and the event has inspired talk of again starting our midweek practice sessions. Conclusion of the new UK style court is a vast improvement. The cross lines allow each caster to spot their longest cast, reducing flags on the field that have to be measured. This method will also allow for a leader board to be posted during the event, which will improve the spectator and caster’s enjoyment. On the down side, although measuring from the cross lines provides a fair tournament, the US casters are used to a higher level of accuracy. So, as a club we will be measuring a caster’s longest cast by laser in the future, when possible.
